Armstrong Redwoods
OIl on masonite, 2006.
This image depicts a striking landscape set in a forest or wooded area. Towering trees with thick, textured trunks frame the scene, casting shadows and creating a sense of depth. Their dark green and earthy tones evoke a natural, earthy atmosphere.
At the center, the light filters through the tree trunks, illuminating a small patch of ground that seems to beckon with mystery. The soft blue representing a nearby road, adds a serene contrast to the surrounding colors, suggesting a tranquil spot that invites reflection.
The blending of colors and brushstrokes gives the image a dynamic feel, capturing the essence of nature in a raw and textured manner. This interplay between light and dark could symbolize the duality of nature – the peaceful and the ominous, urging the viewer to contemplate the balance inherent in natural settings. Overall, it exudes tranquility while hinting at hidden secrets within the woodland.
A scene of redwood trees at the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve. I began this on site and finished it in the studio as it required multiple layers to build up the surface and extensive use of palette knives. In fact, the final painting surface was done exclusively with palette knives.
